What Does the Bible Say About Abuse?

A Lifeline for the Wounded and the Weary

I was reading through the Psalms this week. I can be found there a lot. There is just something about David and his rawness. He doesn’t sugarcoat his suffering. He doesn’t stuff it or put on a perfectly positive facade. He pours it all out and tells God exactly what he is thinking. I like that kind of vulnerability. I like seeing what God can do with pain. It gives me hope that I’m not alone.

This week, three verses stopped me in my tracks. Psalm 52:2, Psalm 55:21, and Psalm 56:2. They call out abusive behavior in words so clear it felt like a spotlight:

“All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharpened razor; you’re an expert at telling lies.” — Psalm 52:2, NLT

“His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!” — Psalm 55:21, NLT

“I am constantly hounded by those who slander me, and many are boldly attacking me.” — Psalm 56:2, NLT

This is what emotional abuse looks like. Smooth words. Sharp deception. Charm that cuts like a knife. Those who destroy with their mouths and blame you for bleeding.

But God sees it. The Bible doesn’t minimize your pain. It names it.

What to Do When You’re Afraid

“But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3, NLT

David doesn’t deny fear. He admits it and brings it to God. If you’re afraid of what your ex might do, afraid of what your child is facing, afraid you’ll never feel normal again — you’re not failing. You’re human. Bring your fear to the only One strong enough to carry it.

Where to Run When You’re Exhausted

“Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” — Psalm 55:22, NLT

This is for the woman holding up the whole world. For the mom trying to protect her peace. For the survivor still being triggered by a text. God doesn’t say, “Carry it better.” He says, “Give it to Me.”

The Power of Staying Planted

“But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.” — Psalm 52:8, NLT

No matter what storms rage around you, you can remain planted. You can grow. You can bear fruit. You can thrive. Because abuse doesn’t get the final word. God does.

The Promise That Undid Me

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” — Psalm 56:8, NLT

Every tear. Every sob. Every moment you felt invisible. God saw it. God caught it. God recorded it.

Not one second of your suffering has been missed. Not one drop of your pain has been wasted. Not one battle has been fought alone.

What Else Does the Bible Say About Abuse?

1. God Hates Abuse and Oppression

Psalm 11:5 — God hates those who love violence.
Malachi 2:16 (CSB) — He condemns harsh treatment of wives.
Proverbs 6:16–19 — He detests lying tongues, hearts that plot evil, and people who sow discord.

Abuse is not a gray area to God. He calls it evil.

2. God Sees You — and He Defends You

Exodus 3:7 — “I have certainly seen… I have heard… I am aware.” Psalm 34:18 — “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” Proverbs 22:22–23 — He defends the oppressed and promises justice.

You are not invisible. You are not alone.

3. Abuse Violates God’s Design

Ephesians 5:25 — Love like Christ: sacrificially. Colossians 3:19 — Never treat your wife harshly. 1 Peter 3:7 — Treat her with understanding and honor.

God never blesses abuse. Ever.

4. Abusers Will Answer to God

Galatians 5:19–21 — Outbursts of anger and hostility are condemned. Matthew 18:6 — Harming the vulnerable is deadly serious. Romans 12:19 — Justice belongs to the Lord.

Abuse may go unpunished by man, but not by God.

5. You Are Called to Peace

1 Corinthians 7:15 — “God has called you to live in peace.” Isaiah 1:17 — Seek justice. Help the oppressed.

God is not glorified by your suffering. He is glorified when you walk in the peace and dignity He died to give you.

6. God Heals the Brokenhearted

Psalm 147:3 — He heals the brokenhearted. Isaiah 61:1 — He came to release captives and comfort the broken. Joel 2:25 — He restores what was lost.

Healing takes time. Scars may remain. But you will rise. Because your story isn’t over.

You Are Not Alone

You’re not crazy. You’re not overreacting. You’re not broken beyond repair. You are not alone.

The Bible doesn’t dismiss your trauma. It speaks directly to it.

So keep coming to the Psalms. Keep pouring out your pain. Keep trusting the God who counts every tear and binds every wound.

He will sustain you. He will not let you be moved.
